ALS New Mexico and Pitre Family Foundation Home Modification Program

Living with ALS brings enough challenges—your home shouldn’t be one of them. That’s why ALS New Mexico, with the generous support of the Pitre Family Foundation, is proud to offer the Home Modification Program. This initiative provides up to $5,000 in financial assistance to help individuals and families affected by ALS make their homes safer, more accessible, and better suited to the needs of those living with this disease.

Whether you need a ramp to enter your home safely, wider doorways for wheelchair access, or a modified bathroom for easier use, this program is designed to ease the financial burden. With these essential changes, families can focus more on comfort and care, and less on out-of-pocket expenses.

What the Program Covers

The Home Modification Program covers a wide range of accessibility upgrades tailored to the needs of ALS patients. Common modifications include ramp installations, bathroom and shower adjustments, widened doorways and hallways, and other approved changes aimed at improving daily life at home. Each modification is considered based on its impact on safety, mobility, and comfort, with the goal of helping individuals live with as much independence and ease as possible.

Who Can Apply?

This program is open to individuals diagnosed with ALS who reside in New Mexico, as well as their immediate family members providing care or support. Each applicant may receive a one-time, lifetime award of up to $5,000. The funds can be disbursed either as reimbursement for completed work or as a direct payment to contractors or vendors involved in the modifications.

How the Program Works

The application process is straightforward. First, applicants complete a Home Modification Grant Application. Then, they submit receipts or contractor quotes for the proposed work. Applications are reviewed by the ALS New Mexico Care Services Committee, and once approved, funds are distributed either to the applicant or directly to the vendor. Throughout the process, ALS NM staff are available to provide guidance and support, ensuring a smooth and stress-free experience.

Why This Program Matters

Home modifications are more than just physical changes—they offer dignity, independence, and peace of mind. This program enables families to focus on living well and caring for one another, rather than worrying about barriers in their own homes.

Funded by the Pitre Family

Thanks to the ongoing generosity of the Pitre Family Foundation, ALS New Mexico is able to offer this meaningful support. Together, we’re helping New Mexicans with ALS create safer, more comfortable living spaces—one home at a time.
