ALS New Mexico
ALS, or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, often referred to as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, leading to muscle weakness, paralysis, and ultimately respiratory failure. At ALS New Mexico, we are dedicated to providing comprehensive resources and assistance to individuals and families impacted by ALS throughout the state of New Mexico. We advocate for those with ALS throughout New Mexico, as well as their families through volunteer efforts, donations, fundraising, and comprehensive care and support as we continue to help fund research for a cure.
Understanding ALS
ALS is a complex disease that affects each person differently. It primarily targets the motor neurons, which are responsible for controlling voluntary muscle movements. As these neurons degenerate, individuals may experience muscle weakness, twitching, and difficulty with speech, swallowing, and breathing. While the cause of ALS remains largely unknown, ongoing research is shedding light on potential genetic and environmental factors contributing to the development of the disease. ALS New Mexico continues to raise money for research to find a cure for ALS and to better understand how the disease is caused.
