May Is ALS Awareness Month: Information on ALS and Upcoming ALS Events
May is ALS Awareness Month, a time to honor those affected by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. This progressive neurodegenerative disorder impacts nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, leading to muscle weakness, paralysis, and, ultimately, respiratory failure. Each year, approximately 5,000 new cases are diagnosed in the United States, with an estimated 30,000 individuals living with ALS at any given time. You can help make a difference this ALS Awareness Month by volunteering time, advocating in New Mexico, and donating to ALS New Mexico.
Learning More About ALS in New Mexico and Beyond
While the exact cause of ALS remains unknown, research indicates that both genetic and environmental factors may contribute to its development. Notably, military veterans are twice as likely to develop ALS compared to the general population. Currently, there is no cure for ALS, but treatments are available to manage symptoms and improve quality of life. Recent advancements include the approval of new therapies that slow disease progression and reduce complications. ALS New Mexico also offers a plethora of resource guides and support groups for those living with ALS in the state.
