DAILY LIVING GUIDES
The Joel Goldhirsh

ALS Home and Daily Living Guide

These practical guides aim to help people living with ALS improve their everyday quality of life and empower family and paid caregivers with the knowledge, skills, and resources needed to provide the best care possible.

Educational guides created in partnership with:

RESPIRATORY
INTRODUCTION TO BRACES
When muscles weaken, people living with ALS may find it harder to hold their head up, raise their arms, or lift their feet. Without additional support, muscles can stiffen and daily activities can become more difficult and painful.

Braces, also known as orthoses, can help you stay safe, have more energy, and experience less pain and discomfort.

If you notice that it is getting more challenging, or taking more effort, to walk or do other daily activities, contact your ALS clinic or neurologist to ask about braces and other interventions.

Educational guides created in partnership with:

POWER MOBILITY DEVICES

Getting the right power mobility device at the right time can help you conserve energy, prevent falls and injuries, and remain more independent. Power mobility devices fall into four general categories.

RESOURCE GROUPS

Led by professionals, ALS Support Groups provide opportunities for group members to share their personal experiences and to learn more about living with ALS. Participants learn that they are not alone nor without help or hope. Support Group meetings are free and open to all people living with ALS and their caregivers. Support Groups sometimes feature speakers on relevant topics and are designed to share information as well as strategies for preserving the independence and quality of life of both people living with ALS and their caregivers.
