Stay Warm During New Mexico’s Chilly Seasons

Living with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) brings unique challenges, especially during the cold winter months. Cold weather can exacerbate ALS symptoms such as muscle stiffness and difficulty breathing. Preparing your home and daily life to combat the chill is essential for maintaining comfort and safety. Here are some tips to help you stay warm and secure during New Mexico’s chilliest time of year!

1. Winterize Your Home Against New Mexico’s Cold Weather

Your home should be a sanctuary from the cold. Start by ensuring that windows and doors are properly sealed to prevent drafts. Use weather stripping or thermal curtains for extra insulation. Consider investing in space heaters for rooms you frequent, but ensure they have safety features like automatic shutoff! An accessible thermostat with programmable settings can also help maintain a consistent, comfortable temperature without requiring manual adjustments.

2. Dress for Comfort and Warmth When Going Out (Or Staying In!)

Layering is key during the colder months in New Mexico. Choose lightweight, breathable fabrics for the base layer and add heavier layers like fleece or wool. Accessories such as scarves, gloves, and hats are essential to prevent heat loss. For individuals with limited mobility, electric blankets or heated clothing can be a convenient way to stay warm without heavy layers.

3. Prepare for Potential Power Outages

Winter storms can lead to power outages, which can be particularly challenging for those living with ALS. Keep an emergency kit on hand with flashlights, extra batteries, and backup power sources for medical devices. If you rely on a ventilator or other equipment, consult your medical provider about alternative power options, such as portable battery packs or generators. And be sure to make a plan with a caregiver, that way you both know what to do in case of an emergency.

4. Build an ALS Support Network You Can Lean On

As highlighted in ALS News Today, building a support network can make a significant difference. People like former Albuquerque Public School coach Eugene Pino (nd ALS New Mexico community member!), continues to inspire his community and works to raise funding for the ALS community in New Mexico. With a strong network of friends and family by his side, Eugene Pino is able to enjoy his time with them and continue to do outreach and invest in ALS programs. Eugene Pino is an inspiration, and demonstrates the importance of cherishing each moment and reaching out to friends, family, and community organizations for assistance and support.
