The Legacy of the Ice Bucket Challenge: How New Mexico Continues the Fight Against ALS
A single viral campaign changed the ALS landscape forever. The ALS ice bucket challenge first swept social media in 2014, inspiring millions to dump buckets of icy water over themselves—and more importantly, to donate and raise awareness for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. While the challenge was global, its impact continues to ripple locally, including right here in New Mexico.
From Viral Sensation to Sustained Momentum
At its peak, the ALS ice bucket challenge raised over $100 million in donations for ALS research and support globally. The campaign gave ALS “a voice,” turning three letters into a movement. The funds raised helped unlock new research pathways, expand patient services, and fuel advocacy efforts that endure today.

How New Mexico Keeps the Spirit Alive
In New Mexico, the legacy of the ALS ice bucket challenge is honored annually. ALS New Mexico calls on communities across the state to get involved—pour water, share stories, and raise funds. In 2024, we celebrated the 10th anniversary of the event through a campaign called “Coolest Way to Be a Hero.” Local leaders, businesses, and families unite for public events that combine awareness, community, and compassion.
The results are tangible: in one recent ALS ice bucket challenge event, ALS New Mexico raised over $230,000 and drew attendance of more than 2,000 community members in Albuquerque. These funds go directly into support for people living with ALS—care services, education, mobility equipment, access to clinics, and more.
Beyond the Ice—Ongoing Commitment
The ALS ice bucket challenge was never meant to be just a momentary phenomenon; it was a catalyst. New Mexico now channels that momentum into sustained action. Through the efforts of ALS New Mexico, the state legislature, and engaged communities, funding, awareness, and patient services continue to grow.
If you’d like to participate, whether by dousing yourself, sponsoring someone, or simply spreading the word, you’re joining a legacy. To make a lasting impact, consider donating directly to ALS New Mexico to help provide care and resources for those affected. The ALS ice bucket challenge may have been the splash, but the ripple effect continues across New Mexico, fueling hope, connection, and progress in the fight against ALS.
